James McCall - BDS (Glasgow), MClinDent Prosthodontics (London), MFDS RCS (Edinburgh)
After qualifying from Glasgow in 1997, I completed my vocational training year in Helensburgh. Since then I have gained a very broad base of experience having worked in general practice, the salaried service, the hospital service and as a clinical teacher at the university of Glasgow. For the last ten years, I have been treating the people of Ayrshire in various locations including Loveyoursmile in Prestwick, Kilmarnock and for the last 2 years in Alloway Place Dental Care in Ayr.
During this time I have been commited to an intensive programme of postgraduate education gaining the MClinDent degree from London University and also passing the MFDS RCS examination which accredited me as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Most recently I have completed a one year training programme in Implant Dentistry.
Although I primarily enjoy providing family orientated Dentistry, I have a special interest and experience in providing advanced restorative dentistry, particularly Prosthodontics, in which I was awarded the MClinDent qualification with merit by the university of London. This involved 4 years of study at the GKT (Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’s) Dental Institute. The Master of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent ) qualification is one of the most advanced clinical qualifications that a dentist can obtain and is recognised as part of specialist training in this field. In the future I hope to sit further exams in order to be accredited as a specialist in Prosthodontics. I also enjoy sharing my knowledge in this area and I have taught both senior students and qualified dentists in all aspects of Prosthodontics.
(Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing teeth and related mouth or jaw structures by crowns, bridges, dentures, implants or other artificial devices. This includes Cosmetic Dentistry. It is recognised as a specialty by the General Dental Council.)
Another area I enjoy is treating nervous patients which stems from my time in the salaried service where I was a Senior Dental Officer and Clinical Lead for NHS Ayrshire and Arran. During my time in the service I ran an adult dental phobic treatment clinic where I received referrals from general dentists throughout Ayrshire. The patients who I treated on these clinics were unable to receive treatment in general practice due to their dental phobia and I treated them using a variety of sedation techniques including intravenous sedation. This is a valuable skill that I use to help nervous patients to cope with treatment at this practice.
I always listen to my patients and try my best to meet their needs in the most gentle, painless way possible. I find getting to know my patients not only helps me to provide good care to them but is also the most enjoyable part of my job. I like to work in a relaxed atmosphere and patients are often surprised that we even end up having a laugh!
Outside of Dentistry, I love spending quality time with my wife Jennifer ,our two young children and our Labradoodle Maggie. I also enjoy hill walking and reading crime fiction..when I have the time!
